Task lighting is simply good quality lighting that adequately illuminates a work area so you can see what you are doing. In a home, task lighting can be particularly useful in kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, garages, workshops, and even in living rooms and bedrooms. Anywhere you will be working on a task that requires good lighting, you should consider installing proper task lighting.
The first thing that should come to your mind when you think of task lighting is the large fluorescent light panel containing a long narrow bulb. Task lighting does not necessarily have to always be light fixtures or wall or ceiling mounts. It is also true that task lighting is in some cases better provided by a particular style of lamp or a flexible system of lights. Although task lighting is mostly meant to be functional, that does not automatically mean that it has to be clinical in its appearance or unattractive. In order to provide a nice appearance, as well as be useful, there is a wide range of stylish designs available on the market. Task lighting can be made from all kinds of materials like bamboo and wood, as well as in copper and glass plus everything in between. This way there can be no problems finding the right material to fit all styles of homes.
For kitchens you can purchase task lighting in the form of fixtures that are mounted under the kitchen cupboards. This way the countertops are well lit. However for other areas such as the sink, stove or island you can choose to install recessed or track lighting to provide adequate illumination. Another place where task lighting comes in handy is over eating tables in the kitchen, as well as dining room. These are often places where people also do work, such as writing or paying bills.
In the bathroom, task lighting is typically installed above and/or to the sides of the mirror to assist in putting on make-up, shaving, or other grooming tasks. This could be in the form of attractive wall sconces and/or a strip-type light fixture mounted horizontally over the mirror. Some people also like to have a ceiling mounted light fixture in either the center of the room or over a shower, bathtub, soaking tub, or whirlpool. As long as there is proper head clearance, a pendant light fixture or chandelier could even be considered over an attractive tub to create a spa-like experience.
In the home office, craft room or workshop of your home it is of utmost importance to have the right lighting since the activities that take place in these rooms, such as sewing or reading, require a lot of light. Having the proper lighting alleviate eyestrain and as a good safety precaution, especially working with power tools, it is necessary to have adequate task lighting in the room. Adequate lighting is important to have directly above the area where the work takes place, even if the room seems well lit from a chandelier or other overhead light fixture. Monorail lighting or track lighting is often ideal since it can be moved or angled and that way the light will shine where it is needed most.
In the garage, task lighting is essential over workbenches, where automobiles are being worked on, or in any area where work will be performed. Garages often utilize overhead lighting, floodlights, and utility lights (often called a “trouble light”) that easily hang above a car engine or on any small hook.
In the living room or bedroom it may be necessary to have the appropriate type of task lighting and especially if you or any other family members will be reading or doing hobbies such as needlework, homework or some other activity that requires sufficient light in these rooms. On an end table or nightstand you can have a side lamp or table lamp. However, a floor lamp, pair of sconces flanking the bed, bedside reading lamp with a flexible arm mounted on the wall or clip-on light with a flexible neck can also be used in these rooms.
Proper task lighting is absolutely necessary for your own comfort and safety. This is true whether you are cooking, reading, writing, doing crafts, painting or even building something like a birdhouse. In the workplace, ergonomics are in place which dictate that employers have to provide the proper lighting for the work area, but in your own home the responsibility is yours alone and you have to make the first move. Today, with so many attractive lighting options available there should be no problems decorating your home with beautiful and functional task lighting.
