If you’re one of the estimated 3% of the population who suffers with excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, it can be something that seems to take over your life. You’re constantly worrying about where you are going, what you are doing, and if the clothes you are wearing will show the stains if you start to sweat.
And no matter what job you do for a living, the problem can seem even worse when you are at work. Worrying about your excessive sweating can make you feel, stressed, uncomfortable and even embarrassed, if you think your colleagues and workmates have noticed your sweating.
Whether you’re sat at a desk all day in a thin shirt, or fetching and carrying in the warehouse in a set of heavy overalls, it can be really easy to get too hot and start to sweat.
Starting to sweat get’s you stressed, which means you could sweat even more!
You can spend most of your time worrying about your sweating, which takes your mind off what you should be thinking about. And you probably feel really uncomfortable being around your colleagues in case they notice. Each day you are at work you could be spending most of your time worrying about your problem.
Do any of these sound like the kind of thing you’ve tried just to get through work?
- wearing t-shirts under your shirt or overalls
- sneaking off to the washroom to dry your sweat patches with the dryer
- keeping your suit jacket on in the office even when its 90 degrees
- changing your shirt or blouse during the day
- putting on more anti-perspirant throughout the day
But these just mask the issue and dont stop you worrying about it, so whilst your colleagues might not notice your excessive sweating, how much time are you spending hiding it from them that you could be spending being more effective at your job?
Worrying about your excessive sweating can leave you short of time to do anything else in the day and you probably hadn’t even noticed the effect it was having.
Around 62% of adults said that going to an interview, confronting the boss, and other job-related issues made them sweat more, according to a survey by the International Hyperhidrosis Society.
In another of their studies they also found that people who suffered from excessive sweating in the workplace were limited in performing physically demanding tasks 25% of the time, in mental and interpersonal tasks 20% of the time, in time management 17% of the time, and in work output 11% of the time.
So excessive sweating is not only affecting your attitude at work but also your performance. Most sufferers have probably never considered the impact their problem was having.
The study went on to say that whilst probably not recognised as such, excessive sweating is a problem that can cause limitations of performance in the workplace similar to those experienced by workers suffering from depression, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
If your office is air-conditioned, or you dont have to do too much manual labour, you might be lucky and be able to cope with your excessive sweating. But imagine how much better work would be if you didnt have to worry about it at all? Imagine if you were able to cure it, naturally, and more importantly, permanently?
Hyperhidrosis doesn’t have a particularly high profile and the IHHS is working to change this. If you are affected, there are options open to you, you can find out more about one of these below.
